About Marin County
🤩 Marvelous Marin 🤩
Marin County is magical. The smallest of the San Francisco Bay Area counties, both in size and population, what it lacks in acreage it compensates for in visual appeal. It is no wonder that it is home to one of the most affluent, active and civically minded populations in the United States. Redwood forests. Beaches for surfing and strolling. Waterfalls. Marshes. Creeks. A genuine mountain. The Golden Gate Bridge! The rainbow arches over the highway tunnel from San Francisco to Marin. On the other side is the Bay Area’s pot of gold—Marin County.
Our Focus Area
Our team focus is for those who reside in Marin County. One of the areas that has been unserved is Marin City. It's an unincorporated community located in Southern Marin County, approximately five miles north of San Francisco. It's a historical African American community that was established in 1942. At that time, Marin City was home to employees who worked at the nearby Marinship Corporation during World War II, building ships for the allied forces. After the war, white residents were able to move freely and purchase homes in Marin County and beyond. However, due to restrictive racial covenants on deeds of trust and other government policies and programs, African American residents were not allowed to buy homes or rent apartments in Marin County. As the Marinship housing deteriorated, Marin City became home to the African Americans and their families. Marin City had a population of 99% African Americans. Now after gentrification it's only 23% African Americans reside in Marin City. Investment in infrastructure all contribute to increasing the disparity for Marin City residents.
Hope Housing wants to help those residents and others with resources and education they need to continue residing in this affluent County.
